How Bed Bugs Get Into Your Home

There are actually a number of different ways bed bugs can get into your home:

  • If you’ve traveled recently, it’s possible that you brought bed bugs home from your travels. If you travel on a regular basis, it’s important to note that bed bugs love places like airplanes and hotel rooms. They routinely hitch rides in luggage, purses, and even soft-sided briefcases.
  • If you buy used furniture, it’s also possible that you’ve brought bed bugs in from those items. They can nest in soft, upholstered furniture, and they’re tough to get out. It’s even hard to take a close enough look to ensure you’re not bringing them in through used furniture.
  • Lastly, you’re particularly at risk if you live in an apartment complex. Bed bugs can travel from room to room, so even if you don’t have a problem, if your neighbors do, they could come into your space and become a serious nuisance for you.

How Bed Bugs Travel

Bed bugs can crawl from place to place, but given their size, it will take them a very long time to get from point A to point B. At most this may get them from one room to another. But how on earth do bed bugs get from one home to another? Or from a hotel in Germany to your home in Worcester?

The answer is that bed bugs are hitchhikers. A location doesn’t need to be dirty or otherwise what people typically expect when it comes to a bed bug problem. Even five-star hotels have reported a bed bug issue now and then. This is because a few bed bugs might tag along on someone’s clothing or their luggage and end up in the hotel. Then the next person to stay in that room before the bed bugs are noticed may have a few hitch a ride out of the hotel and to their next destination.

We Stand Behind Our Work for 90 Days

Dealing with bed bugs alone can be overwhelming. These insects reproduce quickly and make their home deep within the stuffing of your mattress, making it hard to fully treat the problem with most store-bought treatments. With our bed bug treatment, we stand behind our work for 90 days. Within those 90 days from when you sign up for our treatment, we will treat your home to eliminate all bed bugs and their eggs. Then, we will return to your home to re-inspect and touch up if needed.

Bed Bug Prevention Tips

If you’re hoping you never have to deal with these creatures, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to prevent a problem:

  • First, avoid used furniture. You’re very likely to get an infestation in that manner. Using protective covers that encase your mattress and box springs can help too.
  • Eliminating as much clutter as possible is a must, as is vacuuming on a regular basis.
  • If you travel regularly, you’ll want to check the mattress and headboard of every single room you stay in. Inspect the luggage rack carefully, then store your luggage there the entire time you’re in the hotel room.
  • Try to keep your luggage away from the bed and floor. When you come home, unpack your clothes immediately and wash them. If possible, dry everything at a high temperature for at least a half-hour.
  • Vacuum your luggage thoroughly to keep bed bugs out, and make sure you store it well away from your bedroom, maybe even in the basement or garage. Never store your luggage in your bedroom closet or even under your bed.
  • In the event your office or your child’s school has a bed bug problem, make sure you inspect backpacks and briefcases routinely to help prevent bringing hitchhikers home from either location. You may also want to change clothes and launder them as soon as you arrive home.
  • Regular inspections can help too. Bed bugs are a very regular problem for many people, but they don’t have to be in your home. Simple inspections when you change the sheets and implementing easy ideas like reducing the clutter in your home are a great way to make sure you stay bed bug-free.
